1. Go somewhere else
One of my favorite New Year’s eve party ideas for students is to go somewhere new or different. Of course, spending the new year at home can be fun too, but this is a little more special in my opinion.
You also have multiple options. There are different kinds of New Year’s Eve destinations you can choose from! I made a quick list below, so read what applies to you.
For the Party-Student:
- Las Vegas
- New York
- Miami
- Any big city near you
- Big cities in Europe such as London, Paris, Rome…
For the Adventurous Student:
- Stay at an igloo/treehouse/another fun place
- Go camping (bring tons of blankets though cause it’s probably gonna be freezing)
- Take a road trip
- Travel in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Scotland – countries full of nature and mountains!
Those are just a few travel ideas for New Year’s Eve.
Some Tips for traveling for New Year’s Eve on a budget:
Check out local destinations to not travel far:
That can save you lots of money by going closer since you won’t have to pay for an airplane or much gas for a long drive.
So for example, if you live in Virginia, you could go to Virginia Beach, Richmond, Washington D.C, or even Indianapolis for NYE. Neither of them is very far (relatively) and you still spend New Year’s Eve away from your house.
How to find cheap flights:
You can either look for plane tickets to a specific destination on Skyscanner to find the best deal, or if you don’t mind going a little further away, or haven’t found anything local, you can go to Skyscanner and pick “worldwide” and the time frame you want to go on vacation for. The second option will suggest you the cheapest plane tickets worldwide!!

Make Money to travel on New Year’s Eve:
Having more money for NYE destinations is just as important as saving money.
Here are my most popular posts about that:
2. Go out with friends
If you don’t feel like travelling, you can also just go out with your friends and have a fun night out.
This is one of the most common New Year’s eve party ideas for students, and also a good way to celebrate your (hopefully) passed exams.
3. Reunite with Old Friends
If you are spending your NYE at home, you can meet up with your old friends for New Year’s Eve!
I would love to do this New year’s eve for college students idea if my friends were where my parents live now haha. Still, I might visit my friends for NYE we’ll see!
4. Go on a date
If you want to spend New Year’s Eve with your significant other, a fun date night is a perfect way to spend the night!
I can’t wait for my first actual New Year’s Eve with my boyfriend and do all the cliche things you see in movies! We didn’t get a chance to last year because of the panini situation.
So if you have a partner you want to spend NYE with, this idea is perfect for you!

5. Have a Family Game Night
Spending winter break at home?
Game nights can be a lot of fun, and New Year’s Eve is a good occasion to get your family together and have a fun night in. When the clock hits midnight, you can have a drink and celebrate together.
6. Create new Traditions
My family and I do some traditions for New Year’s Eve, and I feel like no matter how I will spend my future NY eves, I want to still include them!
Here are some ideas for what you can do around New Year’s Eve:
- Write down things you love about each other on notes and read them to each other; also keep them for next year!
- Write notes of your best memories and read a year later
- Reflect on the year (here are some prompts) and share (or don’t share) what you achieved and what you failed.
- Write goals and share them with the others (here is how to set goals correctly!)
- Talk about your favorite memories
- Write fails you had or disappointments you encountered on notes and throw them in a fire you’ve all made!
I know, some of these can be very nostalgic or emotional, and you might not want to share some things with your friends or family. But that’s okay!
Whether you choose to do some of these with your family, friends, significant other, or just by yourself, they are great New Year’s eve party ideas for students to reflect on and look forward to!
I personally love creating reports of how much money I made the year, how much I saved, and make new goals for the next year. So you can do that as well.

7. Go to a Fancy Gala/Dance
You may think they are expensive, but check out if your area has any dinners or galas for New Year’s Eve!
Of course, there are expensive ones, but there are also a lot of affordable places you can go to. Head over to Google and search for New Year’s Eve galas or dances! They are fun with family, friends, or your partner!
I have been to one last year and it was a lot of fun, even being way too overdressed haha.
Here is a picture of me and my sister (note: we rented these dresses and there were people in just jeans at that gala (which isn’t appropriate either but well) so we felt quite fancy.)
8. See a Play/Musical
Going to an event such as a play, musical, or even just a good movie theater can be a great way to spend your New Year’s Eve too!
You can go with whoever you like, get tickets to a show you love, and have an amazing time.
9. Go Ice Skating/ Night Outside
For a day or evening outdoors, you can go ice skating, sledding, or even skiing if you have the opportunity.
Being outside is one of the best ways to spend New Year’s Eve as a student, and while it’s not technically a party, it’s so much fun and something different.
Thinking of ice skating, you can get hot cider or punch, eat some good food, and warm up later by a fire. Perfect date if you ask me!
[convertkit form=1700427]10. Host a party
The last idea for things to do as New Year’s eve party ideas for students is to host your own party!
You can theme it if you want, or just have a casual get together.
Whatever you decide, a party is a great way to connect with your friends or family, and have some fun on NYE.
You can make it all fancy or just keep it casual; whatever you feel like. It is YOUR party!
So for party ideas, here are some things you can do:
- have a lot of good food and snacks to keep people going until midnight
- make some winter drinks, some with some without the alcohol
- prepare some drinking games or boardgames
- think of another fun game that counts down each hour. For example there is a bag/box to open at each hour with new things in it!
I hope you liked these New Year’s eve party ideas for students!
They should be more or less on a budget, so let me know which one you end up doing to inspire other students.
Enjoy and don’t forget to set your goals!
Until soon,
