The next year is coming and you may be thinking about your goals, what happened the last year, and whether or not you should start your own business. That’s why I collected my favorite 12 reasons to start your own business in 2021!
While some people have always dreamed of being their own boss and having their own business, others may not be as familiar with how it works and what advantages it actually has.
Both are OK! Wherever you are in your life right now, it can be mind-opening to know some of the reasons to start your own business in 2021, or just in general.
Since this blog is focused on content for students and college students, a few of the reasons will have a connection to common student situations. But you can apply them no matter what you are working right now really!
Let’s get right into it!

1. Be your own Boss
This first reason may be obvious.
But really think about how that would feel to you. We could cover whether or not entrepreneurship is something for you in a different post. But if any of these reasons sound positive to you, I’m pretty sure it is for you!
Being your own boss means that you don’t have to do anything that someone else tells you to. You are your own boss, so you can decide what tasks and projects you want to work on.
Even if you feel like you need to be told what to do, to work productively, you can still do that!
By writing out your work beforehand, you still have a plan of what to do. It’s really not a reason NOT to start your own business.
2. Flexibility
Flexibility is probably the main reason why I started an online business myself.
I had lots of school work to do, so I had a hard time finding a job that is as flexible as my school schedule.
Having my own business made it possible for me to do school + work, and make money!
So whether you are in school, a part-time worker, stay-at-home mom, or even have a full-time job, an own business can be done at any time of day.
3. Make More Money
Sure, you have to establish your business first, and get it all set and working. But as soon as you have it figured out (and if done right), there is NO LIMIT to how much money you can make.
With your regular job, there isn’t really anything you can do to make more money (unless you get promoted).
Yes, an online income may not be as steady at first, but damn it has so much potential! You can’t miss out on it.
I started a business (my blog, Youtube channel, and freelance work) to be able to pay for my college tuition at some point.

4. Do what you Love
This reason is one of my favorite ones.
And it’s especially for those who have been working jobs they don’t even love.
My parents have been self-employed for a few years, so it’s what I know most about.
So when I heard that people hate their jobs, I was shocked.
Are you really going to do something for the majority of your life and not even like it? Damn, that must be horrible!
I know that people like getting paid regularly and “safe”. But is it really that safe? (you could get fired any time actually). And is it worth your mental health and missing out on happiness? Nah. Don’t think so.
(PS: of course, this doesn’t apply to wage/salary workers who like or love what they do. That’s amazing!)
I am not here to judge anyone but I want you to think about the reasons to start your own business in 2021. To start something you really love and can make money with it!
5. Build an Own Brand
Wouldn’t it be fun to have your own brand that people know about? Or to create something new that can help others? You can do all that!
No matter what idea you have or what you like to do. There is probably a market for it.
I love the idea of having a personal brand that people know about.
It’s not really about being “famous”, but more the fact that you create things and show them to the world. Things you created! And not just being a part of a huge company where no one knows what you worked on in the big picture.
Having an own brand, you can create that all yourself, how you want.

6. Support what you want
Another good reason to start your own business is that you can choose what your company/small business will support.
Sometimes when you work for other people who lead a company, you may not agree with all their practices and what they support.
Part of why I quit my part-time job at a fast-food restaurant was their values.
I love when people care about the environment and aim for reducing waste. But the company I worked for was so wasteful. And I had to do things I didn’t support (such as giving straws to every drink).
I promised myself to not work for anyone whose values I don’t support, again.
You can do the same, whatever you want to support, you can align your business with it. I love that part of having a business.

7. Gain Experience
If you are a student, you may not know exactly what field you want to work in later.
But that’s okay!
Besides that, starting your own business is an amazing way to gain experience, even if you find a job at an already established company at some point.
Meeting people in the same niche and networking with them can help you later in your life as well.
You will experience starting and leading your own business, which is extremely valuable.
8. Learn new Skills
This one goes hand in hand with gaining experience. All the skills you will learn during the process of building and leading your business will be valuable to anyone you will work for in the future or show expertise to your customers and audience.
You gain leadership and entrepreneurship skills, and anything you learn in the process.
That usually includes some technical stuff, marketing, writing, designing, and much more, all depending on what you choose to do.
All those skills are extremely important, in any job!
9. A Creative Outlet
Your own business is usually about something you really love doing. That often is connected to something creative.
Being able to have a creative outlet in your life is a great balance to school and other things you may have going on, even work.
Yes, building a business/an idea/online work takes time and a lot of work, because you love it, it balances out. Or at least it should.
10. Less Work
Once you reach a point in your business-building where it’s running well, even without active work, you will need to do less work to make the money.
Your set-up funnels and prior work will lead to a constant money-machine and so, passive income.
That doesn’t mean you won’t need to do ANYTHING, but definitely less than at the beginning stages, where you will probably work way more than you ever were used to. (which is OK cause it will pay off!)
11. Build a Team
You will probably start out on your own, but once you get your business/idea/ freelance work rolling, you can build a team of people working on the same goal as you.
You won’t be able to keep doing all the work while growing your business to more customers and more income all by yourself.
By letting other people do some of the work you don’t have time or skills for, you will be able to make much more and really grow your biz.
12. Achieve your Goals and your Dreams!
Last but certainly not least, you will be able to achieve your goals and all the dreams you had about financial freedom and being able to live a good and free life.
Yes, that is not everything in life. But it is a part of it and can make a big change!
I hope these reasons to start your own business in 2021 helped you to get a new perspective and will help you decide to take the first step!
