Christmas is getting closer but you’re just not in the mood and miss home? I totally get that! I used to get homesick super fast. Not having the Christmas spirit can really change things.
But when I decorate my room and make it cozy, I feel so much better! So these dorm room decor for Christmas ideas can really help you with that, even if it’s not the only way to cope with homesickness (or if you’re not and just want a change).
Sometimes all it takes to feel better (and Christmassy) is to decorate your room a little different and add a few things to spice it up.
Whether you’re going home for Christmas or not, these decor ideas are still perfect to get into the Christmas spirit, even if you won’t spend the actual holidays in your dorm.
Are you ready? I for sure am!

1. Get a Tiny Christmas Tree
Dorms can get really small, so there is no space for a Christmas tree. But who said it has to be huge?
There are lots of options for tiny little Christmas trees, either online or in stores. They don’t take up much space and you can decorate them just like normal ones!

2. Hang Stockings
I love this decoration idea!
Stockings can be turned into a little game with your roommates, such as getting stocking stuffers for each other.
Decorating your dorm with traditional holiday things can make it feel more like home and connect with your roommates and friends.

3. Decorate your Door
Door decoration is definitely a fun dorm room decor for Christmas, even if it’s not really in your dorm itself.
If you just wanna get a little creative or make your dorm more approachable (and known), this is a good one to try this season!
You can use things you already have, or just get some stuff cheap at the dollar store. I would love to get bows, stocking socks, and just Christmas decor to pep it up.
4. Get an Advent Calendar
I don’t know about you, but my family has done advent calendars every year, and I love it.
When you’re away from home, you may miss traditions, but no worries! You have a few options for advent calendars here:
- Make one for yourself
- Get one at the store
- Make one and swap with your roommate
I really like the last one. Here are a few examples of advent calendars as dorm room decor for Christmas.
5. Hang Fairy Lights
Yeah, I suggest fairy lights in every single dorm room decor post, but they just make a room really complete in my opinion.
There are various kinds of fairy/string lights. Heart or star-shaped ones, with clips for pictures, or big or small bulbs.
You have lots of options, which makes it a really good decoration item, especially for winter.

6. Add some Color
You love your room as it is but still wanna make it Christmassy? Switching up the colors of your dorm might be all you need!
You can add colors like red, white, blue or gold to your room to make it more festive.
Adding color can be done through accessories like pillows, wall art, Christmas tree decor (from our first idea) or even blankets.
7. Use Throw Blankets
Talking about blankets, adding throw blankets to your bed makes it much cozier (and put together). If you don’t have one yet, I highly encourage you to get one, it’s really a must-have!
8. Hang Ornaments
Ornaments are great Christmas decorations, even in dorms.
You don’t need to get a tree for them. You can also hang them from the ceiling, your bed, on the door, above your desk, etc.
Ornaments are also great gifts for your friends.

9. Get Christmas Banners
Shopping for dorm room decor for Christmas can also include Christmas banners! If you don’t have the time and resources to make a banner yourself, you can find some on Amazon or Etsy easily.
10. Write Christmas Messages
My last dorm room decor for Christmas idea is to write Christmas notes, whether that’s in your dorm or the hallway.
I think of that as motivation and cute reminders of the holiday season.
You can write messages on letterboards, get quotes and frame them, or just leave handwritten notes on paper.
I think that’s a pretty cute idea, and definitely a good decoration for Christmas.
These were all decoration ideas for Christmas! I hope you found some new inspiration for your room and the holidays.
