The benefits of blogging in college
Let’s start with all the pros of starting a blog, especially while in college. You might have seen some college blogs, such as this one, and want to have one too? No problem! It’s not as hard as you think, but it’s certainly not effortless.
Expressing yourself and sharing your experience
Everyone is different, and everyone experienced different situations they can help others with. College is such a new experience for everyone, and giving advice to new students can be a great way to express yourself, deal with your experiences, and have a space you can always come back to and read your college stories.
Improve your skills
Blogging isn’t just about writing (although it involves a lot of it). You can also improve other skills with it such as networking, marketing, designing, web development, and more.
Of course you don’t need to know everything when you blog, but if you happen to love web design and wanting to learn more about it, starting a blog and experimenting with the technical aspects of it can be something you might want to look into!
On the other hand, if you’re really not tech savvy (me!!), it’ not a problem either because you really don’t need to code if you don’t want to.
Make money
This is one of the most obvious and popular reasons to start a blog in college! That’s totally fair, because it’s indeed a great way to earn money.
I have published a post about how to make money blogging in college, you can check it out here!
There are various ways you can make money with a blog, including ads, sponsored posts, affiliate links, your own products, and more.
The great thing is that once you published a blog post, it brings you money in passively! That’s what I love most about it. It’s not about how many hours you work on it every day, but about how well it’s written and marketed.
It’s a CV booster
Ever thought about blogging this way? It’s actually a great experience to add to your CV to stand out from other job or internship applicants. The skills you gain are valuable for any job you might want to pursue.
It’s flexible
You have weird class times and can’t take on a physical job? Having a blog allows you to work whenever you have time, whether that is in the mornings, at night, or between your classes.

Anyone can start one!
Starting a blog isn’t actually as difficult, neither is it expensive. All you need is a free WordPress account, a web host (there are some from $3 a month), and a theme for your blog. Oh and of course some time to start writing!
In this post, I explain how to set up a blog step by step.
The cons of blogging – Should I start a blog?
These are more like reasons not to start a blog if any of these apply to you. Of course, it depends on how much time you have, but I am a full-time student with a long-distance relationship, and member and executive board member of 3 clubs, so I don’t consider myself bored, however I still manage to post every week and create my own products, etc.
If I can do it, you can do it too!
It’s not a get-rich-overnight scheme
Blogging doesn’t make you rich over night. It’s a process, and everyone makes money at different stages. I have heard of bloggers who make their first $100 in their first month, other in month 6.
The key is to not compare yourself to others and enjoy the journey! Take every opportunity on the way and do your best in delivering quality content to your audience.
You kind of always work on it
Because blogging is such a flexible side hustle or job, you might potentially end up always working on it, sometimes not in a productive way. It happens!
Make sure to schedule your week and include when you want to work on your blog, and what exactly you do in the time. That keeps you more productive.
The nitty gritty
There are sooo many small (and big) things I didn’t think I had to do when I started blogging! For example you need legal pages on your blog to stay compliant to the law, sometimes your site doesn’t look as good as you want it and you need to learn techy stuff or hire someone to fix it, or setting up a funnel to convert a reader to a buyer.
While you shouldn’t stress about those things, they definitely need to be considered, and at some point you’ll have to deal with them :)

Is blogging right for me?
Well after reading the benefits and negatives of blogging, you hopefully have a better idea whether you’d enjoy it or not.
For example, the flexibility aspect and the option of making passive income are the most appealing to me personally, and even with the cons I’d choose blogging over and over again.
For you, that might be different!
Here are some points you can check off to see if blogging is right for you:
You…
- Enjoy writing
- Want to make money online
- Want to make money passively without having to actively work
- Are productive when working on your own (like without a physical environment) – this isn’t too important but I do work very well alone and I really enjoy blogging. However I’m not always productive either haha
- Want a space to share your experience
- Want to stand out with your CV when applying to an internship or a job
- Aim to be your own boss in the future
- Want to make money doing something you enjoy
Of course, you don’t need to say yes to all of them to determine whether blogging is right for you. For example, I don’t necessarily love writing (funny ik)! But writing about things I care about and want to share my knowledge about is much easier to write than academic stuff.
